How people arrive
Most trips start in Dhaka, by air into Hazrat Shahjalal airport or by bus and train from elsewhere in the country.
Season
November to February is the easiest weather for the coast, old cities, and the Sundarbans. June to September is for haors, rainforests, and waterfalls.
Known for
- Hilsa and river fish
- Tea gardens in the northeast
- The Sundarbans mangrove forest
Getting around
Between cities, people use coach buses, intercity trains, launches on the big rivers, and a few domestic flights. Fares below are rough ranges in taka for one adult, not a booking.
Check the latest official rules before Saint Martin and before the hill districts. Permits and visitor caps change.
Fares and hotel prices are approximate. Check them before you go.
Cities
Dhaka
Guide1 places
The arrival city. Old Dhaka is where the fort, the riverfront, and the kebab lanes are. Most trips sleep here and leave again by bus or train.
Cox's Bazar
Guide1 places
The beach town on the southeast coast. Laboni, Sugandha, and Kolatoli are neighborhoods of the same long beach, not separate trips.
Khulna
Guide1 places
The city you sleep in before a Sundarbans boat. The forest itself is not a neighborhood of Khulna. It starts downstream at Mongla.
Sylhet
Guide1 places
The city for tea country and the haors. Ratargul is a boat ride north, not a walk from the station.
Naogaon
Guide1 places
A small northwestern town used as the base for Paharpur. The ruins are outside town, toward Badalgachhi.
Kuakata
Guide1 places
A beach town on the south coast, reached through Barishal and Patuakhali. The town is the beach.
